Make a Lasting Power of Attorney – this is a bit like a Will, something no one wants to think about. A Lasting Power of Attorney is a legal document which gives someone of your choosing power to deal with all of your financial affairs and assets at a time you are unable to do so, for example because of mental or physical incapacity. The important points to remember is that you get to pick that someone, it doesn’t take too long to set up and it doesn’t cost thousands of pounds to do. If you lose mental capacity, for example due to dementia, it’s ultimately a Judge who decides who should be that someone and it’s a lengthy and expensive process.
